Introduction to the Wetlands Listserver
The Wetlands Listserver is a newsgroup, which has been set up to communicate information that is of interest to promoting the wise use and management of wetlands in southern Africa. It was administered by Suzanne and Michael Grenfell, who have just provided a comprehensive CD with every single item that has ever been posted on the Server. This is an amazing record of discussions, debates, issues and ideas that have ever been posted regarding wetlands in South Africa, and hopefully an Honours student will use this material as an analysis of wetland discourse over a period of something like 5 years.
The current Administrator / Moderator of the Listserver is Rebecca Joubert, a Doctoral Student in the Environmental Science Department at Rhodes University, working with Professor Fred Ellery (HOD).
The listserver itself is housed at Rhodes University.
To submit material to the Listserver for dissemination, email your message for moderation to email@example.com. Remember that Rebecca will screen every item before placing it on the server so that member's emails are not congested with items that are likely to waste time. This is not a site to advertise commercial products.
The intention is to encourage the submission of material that will be of interest and raise discussion and awareness, and promote good wetland management. However, please adhere to a sound code of conduct in submitting material to the server, in order to minimise the time needed to screen the material.
As the statutory agency tasked with wetland management in South Africa, the Listserver presents much material that is put out by Working for Wetlands. It is also set to provide the platform for exchange of ideas around the UCT Wetland Health Research Programme, a joint initiative of the Water Research Commission and Working for Wetlands. The project is being led by Professor J Day and Dr Heather Malan, both of the Freshwater Research Unit of the Zoology Department at UCT.
